Like many of the other World Football League teams...
the Chicago Fire had an interesting logo and team colors. Their bright red uniforms and very unique helmet design that incorporated a burning fire over the helmet ear hole was distinctive and immediately noticeable. Some of the names on their 1974 roster were also noticeable and had made their mark in the NFL. Former All Pro running back Leroy Kelly from the Cleveland Browns and QB Virgil Carter of the Bengals helped the Fire get off to a "blazing start" as they won their first four games.

Names such as Bruce Shaw, David Limebrook and Henry Adolfi...
may not have struck fear into the hearts of opponents, but on Wednesday, July 17, 1974, these were the men representing the World Football League Detroit Wheels when they took the field against the Florida Blazers in the first official WFL game. To be fair, the Wheels did have a few "name" players, men who had starred in college or had a few good seasons in the NFL. Hubie Bryant, Warren McVea, Bubba Wyche, Rocky Long, Lee Fobbs Jr., and Mike Wilson at least had the distinction of having played well in front of large crowds although none was a household name.
