Green and Yellow Uniforms...
and court injunctions marked their birth. The first round draft choice of the NFL's Houston Oilers was John Matuszak, a 6'8" 275 pound block of muscle at of the University Of Tampa by way of the University Of Missouri and Iowa Central Community College. Obviously, moving around in order to play football was not a problem for "The Tooz”. Embroiled in a contract dispute, Matuszak made it known that he would not play for the Oilers but would instead, mosey on over to the in-town WFL rival Texans and ply his wares there.

The Jacksonville Sharks began life...
with an owner who knew plenty about ladies undergarments and other business but little about football, a coach whose last stint was at New Smyrna Beach High School, and an equipment manager who was perhaps more fierce and better able to make tackles than any of the players on the squad. Fran Monaco parlayed the money he had made in manufacturing into pro football ownership and hired Bud Asher as his head coach. Asher was actually quite competent and had the experience of having been the head man of both the Daytona Beach and Orlando franchises of the Southern Football League. With former Illinois standout Ron Butkus as the equipment manager (yes, Dick's older brother), the Sharks should have been ready to take the field with confidence but financial mismanagement crippled the team and the league was paying their bills before the inaugural season had ended.
