On paper, The Philadelphia Bell...

appeared to have a powerful team and did in fact set the first dubious record in WFL history when they signed Tom Laputka to a contract. This little known player was a "local" having been a schoolboy star in south Jersey before becoming a feared Canadian Football League defensive tackle. After being named MVP in the Grey Cup Game for the Ottawa Rough Riders, he jumped to the WFL so that he could play close to home.  The CFL sued the Bell and the WFL, successfully, as Laputka was the first Canadian star to sign with the new league and legal history was made. The Bell was forced to pay both the Ottawa team and Laputka's salary "up front" prior to the 1974 season to satisfy the suit but they at least got their money's worth as Laputka was a consistently effective player for them.
